THE PHILADELPHIA WATER DEPARTMENT - GREEN STORMWATER INFRASTRUCTURE IMPLEMENTATION PLAN

As a partner with the NJIT TAB program, BRS, Inc. worked with the City of Philadelphia Water Department to develop a tool for assessing the appropriateness of brownfield sites for Green Infrastructure projects.
History

Under the NJIT TAB services, BRS provided consulting services to the Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) Implementation Program. BRS developed a framework for making decisions on siting green infrastructure projects on contaminated property to assist PWD planners and engineers with GSI site selection. The goal, of the EPA-funded project, was to develop a decision tree and workflow environmental / economic framework for a parallel track development of environmental risk assessment and GSI planning and design data to evaluate various design and construction alternatives for implementing new GSI projects on vacant land. The GSI planning decision tree/workflow documentation was subsequently published on the EPA/NJIT TAB website for use by communities throughout the country seeking to establish their own local GSI programs.

BRS, Inc. Role
  • Developing standards for incorporating evaluation of brownfields for use in green infrastructure projects, including evaluation of risks and liabilities, and performing cost / benefit analysis.
  • Decision making framework for the identification of priority sites for green infrastructure siting.
